The world needs more twitter followers. Over the new year, I was watching Twitter and saw a large number of South American tweets celebrating the coming of 2012. Tweets were in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Similarly, earlier in the day, there were a lot of tweets originating from the Far East and South Asia. That leaves a large tract in the middle of Russia and a large expanse of Sub-Saharan Africa in which there was relatively little traffic during a period of considerable celebratory communications around the globe. The adoption of Twitter needs to be expanded into these countries. Businesses targeting these emerging growth markets would benefit from having more Twitter users living there. Some of these countries lack the telecommunications and wireless infrastructure, but increasingly there is a desire to see these markets penetrated by social networks. The year 2011 was testimony to the impact of social networks in emerging countries with the Arab Spring, so the benefits of more Twitter followers worldwide are clear.
